I'm sitting at a small desk on the side of the wall on the 5th floor of the Harold B. Lee Library. Not much is going on here. Not much action, that is. But I look up and see endless other little desks behind me and in front of me with students' heads bent over notebooks and textbooks and slim laptops, absorbed in their work. Some are staring off in space, probably thinking about the finals next week. Other students leave when they have finished, and more take their place. Here is a library of learning, a library where I'm pretty sure a copy of every book in the world rests comfortably in the impossibly immaculate organized shelves on every floor, in every room.
There are tables here too, with plugs so students can sit and hook up their laptops and begin their work. I often like people-watching here in the library. The tables fill up not one at a time, but student by student. "Full" or "taken" to some students is when there is already one person at each 4 person table. You watch them ask with eyes downcast if they can sit at a table, and they sit at the opposite corner of the student already occupying the table. It's a fascinating effect. We students like our space.
Here is where I can study and focus and not be distracted by all the yummy snacks in the dorm kitchen. Here is complete silence. Here is where inspiration happens and where ideas are discovered and where solitude is man's best friend. Here is the library of learning. Library sittin'. The best place to be.
